Policeman held on graft charge

CHENNAI: The Directorate of Vigilance and Anti-Corruption police on Thursday arrested a Sub-Inspector of police after he demanded and accepted Rs. 1,000 as bribe from an autorickshaw driver.

According to police sources, SI Manickam, who was attached to the crime wing of the J.J. Nagar police in the city, intercepted the autorickshaw late on Wednesday night.

While detaining the vehicle on the police station premises, he registered a petty case against the driver, G. Kumar, of Kurunji Nagar.

The police official demanded Rs. 1,500 as bribe to release the autorickshaw.

Kumar lodged a complaint with the DVAC which laid a trap and arrested the SI, the sources added.
