CHENNAI: Chief Justice of Madras High Court A.K. Ganguly inaugurated the Mahatma Gandhi Memorial Exhibition of Arts and Crafts at the Victoria Technical Institute here on Thursday.

He also gave away awards to artists whose works were shortlisted from exhibits displayed in the years 2005 to 2007. At the event, Mr. Justice Ganguly appreciated the effort of the institute to promote arts and crafts among traditional artists.

As part of this year’s exhibition, more than hundred paintings and other works of art will be on display at the Institute for a month. Among the exhibits are landscapes, sketches and watercolours that transform images from day-to-day life into works of art.

Striking work

A striking work on display is a “text image” of Jesus Christ, where the artist has painstakingly drawn the image by writing the entire text of New Testament in minuscule form with alternating dark and light pencil shades.

Also on display are sandalwood and rosewood carvings of Buddha, Ganesha, Siva-Parvati, etc.
