More arrests in Gujarat carnages

AHMEDABAD: The Special Investigation Team, appointed by the Supreme Court to probe a dozen-odd serious incidents during the post-Godhra communal riots in Gujarat in 2002, has made fresh arrests in connection with the Naroda-Patiya, Naroda Gaam and Gulberg Society carnages.

The SIT, headed by the former CBI director R. K. Raghavan, arrested four persons in connection with the Naroda-Patiya carnage, in which about 90 members of the minority community were burnt alive or killed and thrown into a dry well. The Crime Branch police, who first investigated the case, had arrested 46 persons in this connection, but most of them are now out on bail.

The SIT also arrested six persons in connection with the rioting in Naroda Gaam, about a kilometre from Naroda-Patiya. Five more were arrested for the Gulberg Society massacre in which 39 people, including a former Congress Member of Parliament Ehsan Jafri, were burnt alive.
