Mumbai: A part of the Mahalakshmi racecourse building here went up in flames on Friday afternoon, but there were no casualties. The fire started on the second floor of the Royal Western India Turf Club around half past noon. Wooden furniture, false ceiling and ducting in the gallery were damaged. Nine fire engines and five tankers were deployed at the site in response to a call graded number two, said a source at the fire control room. “It was an open-air gallery terrace and it increased the risk of the fire spreading. That’s why we deployed so many fire engines,” said the source. The reason for the fire was not known immediately. © Copyright 2000 - 2009 The Hindu |
