Basu appeals to Singur protesters

Special Correspondent

KOLKATA: Veteran Marxist leader Jyoti Basu appealed on Friday to those behind the agitation at Singur to “rise above politics” and “cooperate with the State government” in its efforts to create a situation, where work on the Tata Motors project can be resumed “for the interests of the people of the State.”

In a statement, Mr. Basu requested those concerned to accept the package announced by the State government in order that the project materialised.

The package envisages measures for the economic rehabilitation of all farmers whose land has been acquired for the project as well as providing them additional monetary compensation.

Mr. Basu, who was discharged from a city hospital earlier this week after suffering a fall in his residence, said that the image of the State both within the country and internationally would be tarnished if the project failed to come up at Singur.
