CHENNAI: New family cardholders, numbering 48 lakhs, will continue to receive three litres of kerosene each for October and November, with the government issuing an order to this effect on Saturday. Since June, the cardholders have been getting three litres. Due to a variety of measures, including diversion control and stamping of family cards having LPG (liquefied petroleum gas) connections, the Civil Supplies administration has been able to save 8,388 kilolitres (KL) out of the quarterly (July-September) allotment of kerosene, according to a senior government official. On an average, the monthly allocation is 59,000 KL. The official pointed out that these cardholders were not given kerosene till the end of last year. In January and February, they were given one litre each. The quantity went up to two litres from March. The order stated that those cardholders who were not eligible for LPG connections with single cylinders were given three litres of kerosene each in August and September. This arrangement would continue for the next two months. It might become a permanent feature, the official added. © Copyright 2000 - 2009 The Hindu |
