Indian Bank shocks Indian Overseas Bank, enters final

Chennai: Indian Bank shocked Indian Overseas Bank in a thrilling four set contest of the Cholamandanam Sports Development Trust for the Velammal Trophy volleyball tournament at the Mayor Radhakrishnan stadium on Saturday.

Indian Bank, for whom Kalaivanan and Saikrishnan played a leading role, moved into the final where it will meet Southern Railway. Southern was involved in a tough match with SDAT which went to full distance.

In the women’s section, St. Joseph’s College of Engineering, the defending champion, will play GKM in the final.

The results (semifinals):

Men: Indian Bank bt IOB 15-25, 25-21, 25-20, 25-20; S. Rly bt SDAT 30-28, 25-16, 22-25, 17-25, 15-13.

Women: St. Joseph’s College of Engineering bt Dr. Sivanthi Club 25-17, 27-15; GKM Club bt Armed Police 21-25, 25-13, 25-21.

Sathiyan felicitated

V.G. Sathiyan, who won three titles — individual cadet boys, team cadet and cadet boys’ doubles — in the Indian junior Open (an international event in the ITTF circuit) held in Pune recently, was felicitated at a function held on Saturday at V. Chandrasekar’s Academy.

Districts takes trophy

Combined Districts claimed the R.T. Parthasarathy Trophy after defeating City by virtue of the first-innings lead in the under-19 return cricket match.

The scores: Combined Districts XI 389 bt City 260 in 108 overs (S. Karthik 63, I. Shivaram 71, K. Shravan Krishnan 51, R. Aashish Kumar three for 24), by virtue of first-innings lead.

Loyola in final

Loyola will meet Sathyabama in the final of the inaugural CFA-S. Nagalingam Nadar memorial inter-collegiate football tournament at the Pachaiyappas College ground on Monday.

The results (semifinals): Loyola 2 (Fredy 2) bt St. Joseph’s Engg. 0; Sathyabama 4 (Shiju, Mahesh, Sameer and Joffin) bt Pachaiyappas 2 (Vinoba and Vigneswaran) (via penalty shoot out).

Niranjana shines

Niranjana and Kamakshi split six wickets to dismiss Combined Districts for 106 before Niranjana’s unbeaten 26 guided City to victory in the women’s senior cricket match played here.

The scores: Combined Districts 106 in 38 overs lost to City 107 for four in 23.3 overs.

Easy for Panimalar

Panimalar Engineering College defeated Rajalakshmi College 25-18, 25-23, 25-14 in a league match of the volleyball event in the inter-collegiate basketball and volleyball tournament organised by Sathyabama University to mark the inauguration of the college’s new indoor sports complex.

SRM triumphs

SRM Arts College won the Madras University men’s inter-zone badminton tournament in the competitions held recently, beating the A-Zone combined team in the final.
