Lawyers urge Ganguly to withdraw directive

Special Correspondent

CHENNAI: The Federation of District and Subordinate Courts Bar Associations of Tamil Nadu and Pondicherry has requested Chief Justice A.K. Ganguly to withdraw the directive of some High Court judges that accused execute bond with sureties to the satisfaction of investigating officers.

In a memorandum, federation chairman P. Paramasivam said lawyers, accused and those who stood surety faced difficulties; advocates would have to go to the police station for presenting sureties, so they might be able to attend to court work.

Supporting affidavits

The Madurai Bench had issued a circular last month stating that the supporting affidavits of appellants in criminal appeals, attested by the Superintendent of Prison or the officer-in charge, for seeking suspension of sentence or bail should be filed. This procedure would also hamper the work of advocates.
