V-C plans series of workshops

Principals of affiliated colleges attend meeting

Colleges have the expertise to develop varsity: V-C

Kakinada: The Jawaharlal Nehru Technological University (JNTU) has its task cut out to compete with its counterparts in Hyderabad and Anantapur and other universities in the country as it emerges from its nascent stage.

All the constituent colleges of JNTU play a crucial role in transforming it into a world class institution with focus on constantly enriching the technical knowhow, said Vice-Chancellor of JNTU (Kakinada) Allam Appa Rao.

Addressing a meeting of the principals of JNTU affiliated colleges here on Tuesday, Prof. Rao said he planned to conduct a series of workshops to sort out issues involved in the transition from the erstwhile JNTU Engineering College to the fully independent university.

The large number of colleges under the purview of JNTU had the necessary `gamut of expertise’ to beutilizedfor developing the university into a model institution. Prof. Raoobserved that the opening up of the world economy had brought about unprecedented opportunities and the onus of enabling the students to benefit from it was on the institutions. The colleges had to therefore gear up to meetchallenges.

Stress on quality

Prof. Rao said there had been a quantitative improvement in terms of number of colleges but what was required was a qualitative change. There should be due emphasis on what he described as `intensification of quality’ commensurate with the number of colleges which had risen to an extent where there was no dearth of seats. Change could not be brought overnight but JNTU made a fresh beginning to offer quality education better than in the past, Prof. Rao said.

JNTU Registrar V Ravindra and JNTU Engineering College principal E.V Prasad spoke and pledged their support to the collective efforts to take the historic institution to exalted positions.
