Comprehensive drinking water project on the anvil

GUNTUR: Municipal Commissioner Siddharth Jain on Tuesday said that two more new reservoirs, at A.T. Agraharam and N.G.O Colony were in the pipeline and proposals for the construction of the two reservoirs were being studied.

The Commissioner conducted review meetings on the various developmental works being taken up in wards on the A.T. Agraharam reservoir site. Corporators, Sk. Saida, Adapa Srinivasa Rao, B. Jyothi and Dasari Jyothi were present. Mr. Jain reviewed the progress of the ongoing developmental works, several schemes and sanctioned several new works.

Earlier, the Commissioner said proposals to have a comprehensive drinking water project to meet the drinking water requirements of the city till the year 2038 at a cost of Rs.150 crore were sent to the State Government.

The Commissioner held discussions with senior officials of the Municipal Administration department and said that efforts were being made to seek World Bank grants for the above project under Andhra Pradesh Urban Reforms and Municipal Services (APURMS).

The GMC would get 40 per cent as a grant from the World Bank, 45 per cent from the State Government’s grants and the remaining amount it has to generate from its own resources.

He said a team of World Bank officials would visit the city in October to conduct a feasibility study of the project and expressed confidence that funds would be secured in three months.

Under the scheme, the city would be divided into 19 water zones and efforts would be made to ensure 24X7 siupply supply in some areas on an experimental basis. The scheme also envisages an additional 90 MLD from the Mangalagiri Pumping Station and the Guntur channel. All the dilapidated pipelines would be replaced with new ones.
