‘Adopt safety measures for school vehicles’

Bangalore: Minister for Transport R. Ashok has directed all school managements to adopt safety measures in school vehicles along with compulsory fixing of speed governors on or before September 30 in accordance with the directions of the Karnataka High Court.

In a statement here on Wednesday, Mr. Ashok said apart from fitting speed governors, the school vehicles must be painted in yellow the words “school vehicle” should be written in block letters on all four sides of the vehicle.

The vehicles should have a first aid box, a fire extinguisher and safety door lock.

The drivers of the vehicles must have five years of driving experience with valid driving licence.

Valid fitness certificate and permit of the vehicle must be kept in the vehicle.

The educational institution has to provide security staff to the vehicle while carrying children. Suitable space has to be provided under the seats for keeping the bags of the children.

Further, excess children should not be carried against the permitted capacity.

The maintenance of the school vehicles is the responsibility of the administrative head of the institution, the press release said.

The administrative heads will be held responsible for any accidents caused due to the negligence in maintaining school vehicle, the press release added.
