CBI arrests seven for encashing fake RBI cheques

Staff Reporter

NEW DELHI: Seven persons have been arrested by the CBI for allegedly getting fake cheques of the RBI cashed through accounts in various banks in Delhi and Uttar Pradesh. The agency’s Bank Securities and Fraud Cell (New Delhi) recently registered a case of fraudulent encashment of the RBI cheques for about Rs.14.55 crore after the bank authorities lodged a complaint. Investigations revealed that the RBI had issued a blank cheque book to the North-Eastern Railways, Gorakhpur, which was yet to be used. The accused printed cheques of the same series, filled up the amounts payable, and, after forging signatures of the railway officials concerned, got them cashed in accounts opened at several places in U.P. and Delhi. The amount fraudulently withdrawn was further transferred to other banks and individuals , said the CBI officials.
