Do not act in haste on parking order: chamber

‘Do not take action without sufficient parking space’

‘Constitute a Malabar Development Authority ‘

Kozhikode: The Calicut Chamber of Commerce and Industry (CCCI) has said it will not be fair to ‘act hastily’ on the High Court order which bans roadside parking as there is a shortage of parking space in the city.

The CCCI, at a meeting here on Wednesday, called upon the Home Minister and the City Police Commissioner to postpone police action against those parking their vehicles by the roadside. The CCCI’s general body had passed a resolution in this regard recently. The chamber pointed out that it would not be right to take punitive action without providing sufficient parking space.

The chamber also reiterated its appeal to the government to constitute a Malabar Development Authority to implement development works in the region.

The CCCI also called upon the government to expedite acquisition of 132 acres of land for the development of the Calicut airport. It sought a special package for the development of IT and tourism sectors by speeding up the expansion of the Calicut railway station and establishing a cyber park by making use of the land available with Grasim Industries at Mavoor.

M. Sreeram of Dayana Food Products was elected president of the chamber. A.M. Shareef will be the new honorary secretary and M.K. Nazar the treasurer.
