Dilemma as Praja Rajyam delays announcement of agenda Immediate task is to defeat Congress at State and Centre, say leaders
Strategic moves: Left party leaders K. Narayana and B.V. Raghavalu at a joint meeting in Hyderabad on Wednesday. HYDERABAD: The State Communist Party of India (Marxist) and Communist Party of India appear to be sharply divided over the possible tie-ups with other political parties in the next general elections. Even as the dilemma in finalising their stand because of the delay in announcement of agenda by Praja Rajyam continues, the CPI’s intensified efforts to bring together Praja Rajyam and the Telangana Rashtra Samiti have landed the other major Left party in a State of confusion. CPI State secretary K. Narayana’s comments about the Left’s efforts to forge an alternative without the Telugu Desam put the CPI (M) leadership in an embarrassing situation as they feel that such statements would not send proper signals. TDP as ally“What kind of signals will such statements send when we are actively working with the TDP to form an alternative to the Congress and the BJP at the national level? What answer do we have if the people ask why the TDP that could be a good ally at the national level cannot be the same at the State level?” a senior CPI (M) leader asked. Moreover, the immediate task before the two Left parties is to defeat the Congress at the State and national levels and the key role the TDP would play in achieving this could not be ignored. Dr. Narayana, however, clarified that their views would be conveyed to the party’s national leadership that would take a final decision on the alliances. Briefing reporters after a joint meeting of the CPI and CPI (M) this morning, he said the two parties exchanged views on the existing political situation including his meetings with TRS president K. Chandrasekhar Rao and Praja Rajyam chief Chiranjeevi. CPI (M) State secretariat member Y. Venkateswara Rao said the issue of alliances would be discussed by the State and Central leaderships of the two parties and a final decision would be announced jointly. © Copyright 2000 - 2009 The Hindu |
