Yamuna level falls to 205.53m

NEW DELHI: The water level in the Yamuna dipped from 206 metres to 205.53 metres on Wednesday.

According to government officials, the level is expected to fall further in the next 24 hours. “After it reached 206 metres on Tuesday evening, the level gradually began to dip through the night. By late Wednesday evening, it came down to 208.53 metres and we are hopeful that by Thursday noon it will be 204.85 metres,” said a senior official.

The rising level had led to fear of floods in the city. Residents of low-lying areas and those living near the banks were relocated to camps that have been set up in various parts of the Capital.

The Old Yamuna Bridge has been closed for traffic and the routes of several trains have been changed.

The Railway authorities said 24 trains had been diverted and 10 cancelled because of the rising level of the Yamuna.

“A constant vigil is on. We will continue to monitor the situation even though we expect the water level to dip further. People will be asked to stay in the camps for some more time,” said the official.
