NREGS workers told to open bank accounts

About one lakh accounts for NREGS workers have been opened till date


NAMAKKAL: Collector U. Sagayam appealed to the people who have registered for work under the National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme (NREGS) to open savings bank accounts.

Participating at a meeting attended by the bankers in the district recently, the Collector said that the district administration estimated that about 1.45 lakh people, who registered for work under the scheme, would open bank accounts. About one lakh accounts have been opened till date.

Remaining accounts

The remaining persons should also be encouraged to do the same, he said.

The Collector stressed that co-ordinated efforts should be made to open bank accounts for the remaining 45,000 people in another ten days.

Mr. Sagayam also wanted the bankers and block development officers to extend their co-operation for the effective implementation of NREGS, which is aimed at enhancing the livelihood security of households in rural areas by providing at least 100 days of guaranteed wage employment in a financial year to every household. Senior officials were present in the meeting.
