Acoustics lab planned in Andamans

CHENNAI: The National Institute of Ocean Technology proposes to set up an ocean acoustics laboratory near Mayabunder in the northern part of the middle Andamans, director S. Kathiroli said on Thursday.

The laboratory, which would undertake studies on ocean acoustics communication, could be established with the support of other institutions, Dr. Kathiroli said, participating in the inauguration of the Indian chapter of the Oceanic Engineering Society , under the auspices of the Institute of Electric and Electronics Engineers . Noting that the location was good, he said the support of the Union Ministry of Earth Sciences was assured. He also expressed concern over the inadequate strength of skilled manpower in ocean engineering.
