Functioning on small premises on Shanmugham Road, the store has cotton saris priced from Rs. 300 to Rs. 1,500, silk saris priced from Rs. 2,000 to Rs. 20,000, readymade shirts, jeans material and its ever popular bedspreads and pillow covers among others. In 2006, the sales during the festival season were worth Rs. 23 lakh, and Rs 35 lakh last year, said R. Janakiraman, showroom manager. And this year, they were set a target of Rs. 45 lakh and were hopeful of making sales anywhere between Rs. 50 lakh and Rs. 55 lakh. The outlet draws residents from West and East Tambaram and localities all along Velachery Main Road till Medavakkam and Chromepet, Pallavaram, Pammal, Anakaputhur and Kunrathur. However, it is the regular clientele from remote rural pockets near Chengalpattu and those near Guduvanchery, Padappai and Vallakkottai, which is a source of encouragement for the department to update its stock at the showroom. Many regular customers are also members of the Silk Sari Savings Scheme, Mr. Janakiraman added. © Copyright 2000 - 2009 The Hindu |
