“AIADMK, DMDK must be part of third front”

Special Correspondent

D.Pandian

CHENNAI: It will be good for the country if the AIADMK and the DMDK come together to be part of the third front in Tamil Nadu, said CPI state secretary D. Pandian.

Talking to reporters on Friday, he said the Left parties would talk to all the political parties that were not part of the Congress and BJP alliances.

Asked how the communists could join hands with AIADMK, whose general secretary Jayalalithaa was highly critical of the Left parties in the past, Mr. Pandian said criticism depended on political situation.

He said the Left would welcome the PMK if the party was interested in joining the alliance.

Mr. Pandian said his party would observe a fast in Chennai on Gandhi Jayanthi day urging the Sri Lankan government to find a political solution to the country’s ethnic crisis.

“The Indian government should prevail upon the Sri Lankan government to openly declare a political solution. Till then India should not provide any assistance to that country,” he said.

When told about the Sri Lankan government’s argument that political solution could be found only if the LTTE laid down arms, Mr. Pandian said, “We could call upon the LTTE to give up arms only after the Sri Lankan government makes its proposal public.”

“After studying the proposal we can make the request to the LTTE,” he said.
