Another title for Mundir Sherazi

BANGALORE: Mundir Sherazi, for the second time in a week outclassed Amit Bhushan to win his second title in this edition of the State ranking championship. Having claimed the billiards title last week, Mundir powered to an emphatic 68-19, 68-34, 44-7, 28-61, 63-26 win to clinch the junior snooker title as well, at the KSBA hall here on Saturday. This was Sherazi’s third straight win in the semifinal league.

Sherazi and Amit Bhushan will represent Karnataka in the Junior Nationals.

Meanwhile the State Association will conduct the Ladies billiards and snooker starting on September 29.

The results: Junior ranking snooker: (Semifinal league): Mundir Sherazi bt Amit Bhushan 68-19, 68-34, 44-07, 28-61, 63-26. Third place: Ashish Lunawat bt Mansoor Iqbal 50-42, 56-55, 66-77, 64-26, 67-27.

Bhatkal hits century

Rahul Bhatkal hammered 103 in 111 balls with 14 fours to help Bangalore City XI post 291 for seven at close on the first day of the KSCA inter-zonal under-19 cricket match against Moffusil XI, in Bangalore on Saturday.

Leon Khan chipped in with 85 for City XI.

In another match, Bangalore Zone made 251 with Akshay Ballal top-scoring with 96. In reply, Combined City XI was 37 for three at close.

The scores: Combined Moffusil XI 215 in 70.5 overs (Mohammed Safraz Ashrat 56) vs. President’s XI 41 for three in 20 overs; Bangalore Zone 251 in 80.2 overs (Akshay Ballal 96, R. Vinay four for 33) vs. Combined City XI 37 for three in 13 overs; Bangalore City XI 291 for seven in 75.1 overs (Leon Khan 85, Rahul Bhatkal 103, G.K. Vinay four for 70) vs. Moffusil XI.

Arvindam passes away

Veteran sports journalist R. Arvindam passed away on Saturday afternoon due to cardiac arrest. Arvindam, who was ailing for sometime and turned 65 earlier this month, is survived by his wife and two sons.

Arvindam covered all sports and was at his best in writing on golf, billiards and motor sports. Arvindam had served in various city papers including Deccan Herald, Indian Express and Times of India.

Arvindam was one of the founder members of the Sports Writers Association of Bangalore, was a recipient of the Dasara Award and the KOA Awards. SWAB felicitated him this year for his services to sports journalism. SWAB mourned his death.
