State best in job scheme implementation: study

HYDERABAD: The National Consortium of Civil Society Organisations has acknowledged Andhra Pradesh as the best State in the implementation of the National Rural Employment Guarantee Programme (NREGP).

A study done by the consortium has revealed that the NREGP implementation is ‘remarkable’ and ‘unparalleled’ in the country. Its findings, released by the Chief Minister’s Office on Sunday, said the Rural Development Department, by employing Information Technology techniques and robust social audit, had implemented the programme most effectively.

“Andhra Pradesh has become not only the role-model in the successful implementation of the most popular programme, but also won appreciation worldwide for its flawless processing and timely payment of wages to labourers,” the report, authored by Mihir Shah and Pramathesh Ambasta, said.

The study showed that NREGP implementation has generally been poor in other States because of high expenditure.

But independent enquiries reveal leakages in money reaching the poor. However, AP affords an extraordinary counter-example bucking this trend, it noted.

“What has happened in Andhra Pradesh over the last two years is unparalleled in the history of independent India, but these soul-stirring event, has received surprisingly little attention,” it said.
