TIRUCHI: The Transport Department will soon open a Motor Vehicle Inspector (MVI) office at Thuraiyur.

A building to house the office has been identified and officials have begun the preparatory work for its commissioning.

The office, coming up on Perambalur Road, will be computerised for swift issue of driving licence and receipts for payment taxes and other fees.

Works such as registration of vehicles, issue of fresh licence and renewal, issue of Learner’s Licence, fitness certificate, collection of taxes and other fees will be carried out. Fresh permits and its renewal will continue to be issued at the Srirangam Regional Transport Office (RTO). Officials said Musiri and Thottiyam taluks in the district have been attached to the MVI office at Kulithalai in Karur district.

Residents of these two taluks could approach the Kulithalai MVI office, instead of approaching the Srirangam RTO, for obtaining driving licence, its renewal, LLR, registration of vehicle, payment of taxes and other fees and fitness certificate. The permits and its renewal for all types goods carriages and contract carriages will continue to be issued by the Srirangam RTO.

The opening of MVI office at Thuraiyur and the attachment of Musiri and Thottiyam taluks with Kulithalai office will reduce the work load in Srirangam RTO which will have Srirangam, Mannachanallur and Lalgudi taluks under its limits, a senior official said.

The Department has identified buildings for the new Regional Transport Office at Ariyalur, new MVI office at Aranthangi and the newly upgraded RTO office at Kumbakonam. All these offices would also be computerised and are expected to become functional from next month-end. The authorities said Tiruchi and Srirangam RTOs have been linked to the main server installed in the Transport Commissioner’s office at Chennai. Data including number of licences issued, number of vehicles registered, fitness certificates were being transferred every day to the Chennai office.
