No power cuts, please!

Dwaraka Tirumala is an important pilgrim centre after Tirumala in the State. But, there is a heavy power cut of 6 to 9 hours per day. As a result the pilgrims are facing lot of inconvenience. I was at Dwaraka Tirumala from 29.7. 2008 to 30.7.2008 and spent about 16 hours. During this period there was a six hours power cut. So, the AP Transco is requested to exempt Dwaraka Tirumala from power cut for the benefit of pilgrims.

Apropos the report ‘Age no bar for this swimmer’ in The Hindu dated September 9, it is inspiring to know about 60-year old Vijayawada-based woman swimmer, who showcased her dexterity in free style, back stroke, butter-fly etc. bagging gold medals. The icing on the cake, however, was her sterling performance of crossing river Krishna from Durga ghat to Sitanagaram covering a distance of 1.5 km in 1999, herself having distinction of the first woman to accomplish such a marvellous feat. Definitely, her enthusiasm is sure to be a source of inspiration to many people.

Encouraging children to enhance their hidden talents is laudable. But, parents are expecting their children to perform beyond their capacities. Of late, various TV channels have been conducting ‘reality shows’ in the name of talent search. These shows entice parents, but the children are victims as these competitions have become unhealthy and leading to more stress on child. Psychologists are cautioning that excessive amount of stress leads to mental depression and poor physical growth. So, I request parents and media to modify these events and create win-win situation at the shows.

The RTC withdrew buses in 3C, 5C and 34 routes recently putting the student community to hardships. The 3C, 5C and 34 are forced to change buses either Sitara or Chitti Nagar or at KR Market to reach their destination. This is rather troublesome as the buses at these junctions are jam packed by the time they arrive at this points. The 27 route bus from HB Colony to Autonagar takes a circuitous route. For non-pass holders it is a costly affair as well as time consuming to change buses every day. Hence, the RTC authorities are requested to restore 3C, 5C and 34 routes services.

There are news reports that the Government has decided to permit Setwin buses to ply in the twin-cities to cope up with increase in commuter traffic. Obviously, RTC have their limitations and could not meet the situation. Similar situation exist in cities like Vijayawada and Visakhapatnam also. So, it is time to permit organisations like Setwin to ply their buses in these cities also. RTC managements or their trade unions should not treat this arrangement as precursor to privatisation. Instead, they should treat it as a supplement to RTC. When the private operators are allowed on long distance routes what stands in the way to allow private operators on city routes?
