Queensland routs Kolkata

Melbourne: Out-of-favour Australian all-rounder Andrew Symonds made very little impact as Queensland defeated Kolkata Knight Riders by seven wickets in the Twenty20 double header in Brisbane.

Making a comeback on Saturday after the infamous “gone fishing” episode, Symonds had figures of (0/8) off four overs with the ball, but failed miserably with the bat, scoring just two.

Batting first, Knight Riders was restricted to 79 for eight off its 20 overs, with the Kolkata side’s coach John Buchanan’s son, Michael, top scoring with 16. Only four Knight Riders batsmen managed to score double figures.

Queensland skipper Chris Simpson (two for 11) and Ben Laughlin (two for 15) were the pick of the bowlers for the Australian side.

Chasing the modest target, Queensland had no hiccups as Clinton Perren cracked an unbeaten 50 (11x4) to see his side through by the eighth over without losing any wicket.

Perren was ably supported by Greg Moller (32 not out) at the other end.

However, after racing to the target, Queensland decided to give the visitors the much-needed practice, and agreed to bat on and chase a revised total of 179.

But the Australian side also made light work of that, reaching 180 for three in the 18th over. Perren went on to make 66 off 31 balls and Moller 74 off 40. Lee Carseldine was unbeaten on 31. — PTI
