PUDUKOTTAI: A special awareness programme for the representatives of non-governmental organisations on the adoption of children was held here recently. Speaking on the occasion, the District Revenue Officer, R. Mahendravel, said that the programme was organised in the wake of absence of a non-governmental organisation, duly recognised by the State government for adoption of children. Every time a child was found abandoned in a hospital, it has to be left under the care of the recognised non-governmental organisation in Tiruchi, about 50 km from here, he said, adding that so far 16 children and infants of the district were under the care of that NGO in Tiruchi city. Mr. Mahendravel appealed to the representatives to strictly adhere to the legal provisions pertaining to adoption of children. The process of adoption should be supported by valid documents, without giving room for any legal battle. Resource-persons explained the procedures to be followed for adoption of children and the legal provisions to be strictly adhered to. The District Social Welfare Officer, A. Azhaguselvi and the Deputy Director of Health M. Akila who spoke. Representatives of 37 NGOs in the district participated.
