Medical camps, meetings mark Gandhi Jayanti

Chittoor: Community welfare programmes and other activities were organised by various organisation here on Thursday to mark Gandhi Jayanti.

The Aragonda Apollo Rural Super Speciality Hospital organised a free medical camp at Sundrayyar Street. Suresh of the hospital said medicines were given free of cost to people suffering from various diseases. A 15 per cent concession was also extended to those with chronic diseases. The Chittoor Lions Club president Rambabu on behalf of the club distributed rice to the poor.

The Chittoor Municipality under the Chairmanship of C.K. Babu, former MLA and State Honorary President of Municipal Employees Association, organised a meeting of physically challenged persons on the premises of Municipal Office.

Municipal Commissioner Charles Umapathi said that Rs. 25 lakhs was distributed to the physically challenged people in the town. The Commissioner asked them to utilise the amount for eking out a livelihood.

District Collector Ravichandra along with the Joint Collector Suresh garlanded Gandhi statue on Prakasam Road and paid rich tributes to him for his selfless service and sacrifice in getting freedom to the country. They exhorted the youth to follow the ideals of Gandhi and serve the country. MLC Gopinadh and workers association members also garlanded the Gandhi statue.
