Tirupur: Coimbatore and Tirunelveli brushed aside the challenges of their opponents and entered the semifinals in the boys’ section of the State sub-junior volleyball championship at the Angel College of Engineering and Technology courts here on Friday. Coimbatore scored a hard fought 25-17, 25-15, 20-25, 25-22 win over Dharmapuri, while Tirunelveli pulled off a surprise 25-21, 25-22, 21-25, 23-25, 15-11 win over title-contender Chennai. Gopinath of Coimbatore Golf Club (CGC) clinched the Elgi Trophy (Stableford) with ease in the 39th Nilgiri Autumn Meet 2008, which commenced at the Ooty Gymkhana Club golf course here on Friday. A former national rally driver and a member of the Motor Sport Association of India, Gopinath, despite the tricky condition, traversed the course comfortably to emerge a clear winner with 42 points. Seventeen-year-old Nitin Suresh of Coonoor, with 38 points, surprised the crowd by wresting the second spot. The results: Elgi Trophy (Stableford): 1. R. Gopinath (CGC) 42 pts, 2.
