Constable fined for smoking

CHENNAI: On the second day of the enforcement of the ban on smoking in public places, the State government reinforced its commitment to the cause by levying fine on a police constable in Villupuram.

The squad which was out on the roads in Villupuram on Friday, found a police constable smoking, and slapped a fine on him. The SP of the district also concurred with the squad’s decision and the constable paid his fine.

A total of Rs.14,600 was collected as fine amount on the second day, from a total of 129 persons for smoking in public places and selling tobacco products within 100 metres of an educational institution.

Another 4,200 persons who were found to be smoking in places designated ‘public’ by the Tobacco Act were let off with a warning
