NEW DELHI: Hindustan Motors on Friday launched Mitsubishi Motors’ sports utility vehicle ‘Outlander’. The company also announced its plans to launch another vehicle in the next couple of months.

Priced at Rs. 20.20 lakh (ex-showroom), ‘Outlander’ is an ‘all wheel control’ (AWC) SUV powered by 2.4 litre, 16 valve MIVEC (Mitsubishi Innovative Valve Timing and Electronic Control system) petrol engine that gives a maximum power of 170 PS.

The vehicle, being assembled at Hindustan Motors’ Tiruvallur (Chennai) car plant, is equipped with advanced control systems, safety and luxury features. Hindustan Motors has a marketing and manufacturing agreement with the Japanese auto major Mitsubishi.

Speaking at the launch ceremony here, Hindustan Motors Managing Director R. Santhanam said: “This is a premium SUV for those who are passionate about sports, outdoors and exploring the world around them for new experiences. Mitsubishi’s MIVEC technology gives it not just class-leading performance, but class-leading fuel efficiency and environment friendliness too.” The company expects to sell about 100 units of the SUV every month.

About the company’s future plans, Chairman C. K. Birla said the company would be launching a completely new product soon in the next two months. He, however, did not give any further details. On the market conditions and rising input costs, he said it had been down for quite some time, but it should come back during the festive season. In the next few months, margins should improve as prices of some raw materials have softened, he added.
