CHENNAI: Tamil Nadu won the overall championship in the National karate championship, organised under the auspices of the All-India Karate Do Federation, in Kolkata recently. Tamil Nadu finished with a haul of 43 medals including 15 gold, nine silver and 19 bronze. The gold medallists were R. Sharan Raj, Dinesh Raj, V. Sivaprakasam (two), D. Gajalakshmi, T. Senthil, T.E. Krishnamurthy, S. Raja Murugan, T. Saravanan, N. Nivedhe, Ganesh Moorthy, S. Muruganandan, M. Naresh Kumar, Ashok Kumar and Vijay Karthik. Over 1,500 participants from virtually all States apart from Police, NSG Delhi, Assam Rifles, CRPF and ITBP took part in the championship where competitions were held in 63 events, 26 of them in the girls’ and women’s sections. A feature of the championship was a referees’ seminar which was conducted by Mohey Eldin Ahmed Mohamed from Egypt and a member of the Technical Committee of the World federation. At the valedictory function, the AIKF President, R. Thiagarajan, gave away the prizes. Adithya’s knock in vainCenturies from Adithya Giridhar of City II and M. Adityan of City IV went in vain as City I and City III recorded wins by virtue of the first innings lead in the TNCA under-14 round-robin cricket tournament. The scores: City I 346 for eight in 90 overs bt City II 344 in 87.2 overs (Adithya Giridhar 110, R. Aravind Raj 79, Ashwath Mukunthan 39, K.V.S.V. Uday Teja three for 32) by virtue of first innings lead; City III 294 for six in 90 overs bt City IV 287 in 81.3 overs (M.Adithyan 151, V. Danush Kumar 32) by virtue of first innings lead. Ganesh scalps fiveL. Ganesh Lingam bagged five wickets to help Thiruvallur restrict Cuddalore to 74 on the opening day of the TNCA inter-district under-14 cricket tournament round-robin second stage. The scores: Cuddalore 74 in 54.4 overs (L. Ganesh Lingam five for 16) vs. Thiruvallur 56 for no loss in 18 overs (S. Harish Babu 36 n.o.) IIT sports meetThe 44th inter-IIT sports meet, an annual event amongst all the IITs in the country, will be held at IIT campus here. The meet will be conducted in two stages. The aquatics events will be conducted in October, while athletics, weightlifting, badminton, tennis, table tennis, hockey, football, volleyball and basketball would be held in December. The inauguration ceremony will be held on October 5 at 6 p.m. The aquatics events conclude on October 9.
