Discoms to be warned

For violating

grid discipline

NEW DELHI: Fearing penal action by the Central Electricity Regulatory Commission for overdrawing power from the Northern Grid, Delhi Transco Limited wants the Delhi Electricity Regulatory Commission to issue notices to the Capital’s power distribution companies for violating gird discipline.

The State-owned power utility does not want to be saddled with any penalty, so it wants the DERC to issue notices to the discoms to make their own power arrangements instead of depending on the grid.

“Taking a lesson from CERC’s action against the Southern States for overdrawing power, Delhi Transco through the State Load Despatch Centre has decided to petition the DERC to issue notices to the discoms for failing to adhere to the grid code. Delhi Transco’s contention is that the State should not have to pay for the discoms’ inability to meet the demand,” said sources.

Despite warnings from the Northern Region Load Despatch Centre against overdrawing power, Delhi has been doing so with impunity. On Friday, when the peak demand rose to 3,484 MW, the city was overdrawing about 500 MW from the grid.
