Encouragement: Owners egging on the rams at the ‘Tagarina Kalaga’ in Hubli on Sunday. HUBLI: A large number of people, mainly youths and children, who had come to watch “Tagarina Kalaga” (ram fight) held on the occasion of Navaratri festival in Hubli on Sunday had to return disappointed as the event was stopped midway. The police stopped the event as the organisers had not obtained permission from them for the event. The SSK Friends Club had organised the annual event as part of the Dasara celebrations at the Vivekananda High School Ground here on Sunday. Due to the wide publicity , there were hundreds of spectators at the venue. The event went on for nearly two hours, with the spectators clapping and shouting. However, the organisers realised their mistake when the police arrived at the venue and asked them whether they had obtained the requisite permission for conducting the event. DisappointmentWhen the organisers failed to produce the permission letter, the police asked them to wind up the show, much to everyone’s disappointment. Since the matches which are conducted in four categories, were still in the initial rounds, those who had won in the initial rounds had to return home empty-handed. One of the organisers Kishore Meharwade said that the responsibility of obtaining police permission was entrusted to one of the office-bearers who had forgotten about it. The ram fight has been organised by the club since the past few years. However, since the Kshatriya Mahasabha had decided against holding the event the club members did not hold it last year. © Copyright 2000 - 2009 The Hindu |
