“Hyde Act will make India slave to the U.S.”

CPI(M) cadres stage ‘black day’ demonstration protesting against civil nuclear deal

MADURAI: The Communist Party of India (Marxist) was neither against India having any bilateral treaties with any country nor against nuclear power but was only opposed to the adverse implications of the Hyde Act on India, its Madurai district secretary, R. Annadurai, said.

Addressing a protest meeting organised as part of the ‘black day’ being observed by the party opposing the Indo-U.S. nuclear deal here on Saturday, he said that the Hyde Act, from which the nuclear deal stemmed, would make India a slave to the U.S. India would be forced to support the U.S. in all its military endeavours.

Stating that nuclear power was costlier than thermal power, he said that India could make use of its coal resources and natural gas.

Madurai East MLA N. Nanmaran was present. CPI district secretary M. Saravanan and All India Forward Bloc leaders S. Andi Thevar and P.V. Kathiravan and CPI(M) leader R. Jothiram were among those who addressed the gathering.
