Nedumbassery: A police station exclusively for the Cochin International Airport and its peripheral areas is on course to start functioning from October 16 on the airport premises. Home Minister Kodiyeri Balakrishnan will inaugurate the new station house at a function to be held on the same day, according to sources. Though the construction of the multi-storied building was completed several months ago, its inauguration was delayed due to procedural hiccups. The airport allotted 40 cents of land free of cost for setting up the station. According to a decision made by the director board of the Cochin International Airport Limited (CIAL) in 2007, the airport gave Rs. 7 lakh to the Police Housing Construction Corporation for the construction of the police station and it also provided furnishings for the new building. The State government had already sanctioned the requisite staff for the station aimed at enhancing security at the airport. A circle inspector will head the station with five sub-inspectors including a lady sub-inspector. Besides, there will be 10 head constables and 50 constables including 10 lady constables to make the total staff strength at 66. © Copyright 2000 - 2009 The Hindu |
