NAMAKKAL: The health department conducted a ‘Valaikappu’ programme for pregnant women at the primary health centre located in Vazhavanthi Nadu village in Kolli Hills recently. Participating in the programme, Senthamangalam MLA K. Ponnusamy listed out various health care schemes implemented by the State Government for women. The Government provides financial assistance to pregnant women under Dr. Muthulakhsmi Reddy Maternity Benefit Scheme. They were also given free meals at the PHCs, He called upon the women to take full advantage of the health care schemes. Ninty-seven women in the advanced stage of pregnancy participated in the programme. The officials carried out the conventional ’valaikappu’ rituals by offering bangles to them. Health officials said that the programme was primarily organised to create awareness among pregnant women about pre-natal and post-natal care. The officials advised the participants to take healthy food during their pregnancy. The MLA also distributed financial assistance to 17 pregnant women during the programme.
