M.P. unit of SP averse to alliance with Congress

‘It has stabbed us in the back by weaning away our four MLAs’

Samajwadi Party had last week sought 31 seats from Congress as its share for a tie-up in M.P.

New Delhi: While Samajwadi Party has sought 31 seats in Madhya Pradesh from the Congress, a large number of its State unit workers are opposed to having any truck with the latter in the upcoming Assembly elections.

A delegation of over hundred SP workers from Bhopal met party chief Mulayam Singh Yadav here during the weekend and suggested him not to form any alliance with the Congress in the State.

“We met Mulayam Singh Yadav and Amar Singh and requested them not to forge any alliance with Congress,” an SP leader, who along with other State unit workers who had been camping here for the last three days, said today.

“As Congress has weaned away our four MLAs we don’t want any alliance with that party. They have stabbed us in the back,” he added.

The party bosses gave a patient hearing to the State unit workers, the leader said.

After four of its MLAs had joined Congress in Madhya Pradesh last month, SP general secretary Amar Singh openly said the Congress had broken his heart and later emphasised that the party will not have any alliance with it in M.P. for the ensuing assembly elections.

Mr. Singh though has consistently maintained that despite what happened in M.P., the SP will continue to have an alliance with the Congress in U.P.

However in a surprise move, Mr. Singh last week said that his party would be seeking 31 seats from Congress in Madhya Pradesh.

In 2003 Assembly elections, the Samajwadi Party, which has a fledgling presence in M.P., had managed to win eight out of 230 Assembly seats. But with its four MLAs joining Congress and another MLA shifting his loyalty to BJP, the party is in doldrums in the State.

But with its State unit workers opposing to the SP having any truck with the Congress in M.P., things could take an interesting turn if the party leadership decides to ally with the Congress for the Assembly polls there.

Mr. Singh’s statement that SP would seek 31 seats from the Congress in M.P. though could be a hint towards the party leadership making efforts to regain some lost ground before the polls due in November-end. -- PTI
