IUML chief meets Sonia, expresses concern over attacks on minorities

NEW DELHI: Indian Union Muslim League (IUML) president and Minister of State for External Affairs E. Ahamad met United Progressive Alliance chairperson Sonia Gandhi on Monday to communicate his concern over the attacks on minorities across the country.

While reiterating his party’s condemnation for terrorism and extremism, Mr. Ahamad underlined the need to protect minorities from the propaganda war that has been unleashed on them by certain sections of society. Referring to the “encounter” in Jamia Nagar last month, he said while it was important to take action against the guilty, care should be taken to ensure that innocents are not targeted.

Empathising with Mr. Ahamad’s position and echoing his concern, the Mrs. Gandhi is understood to have dwelt upon the difficulties faced by the police and the administration under the circumstances. Mr. Ahamad sought to communicate to her the apprehensions within the minority communitiesAhead of this meeting , the minister met Jamia Millia Islamia Vice-Chancellor Mushirul Hasan.
