SRINAGAR: With strict enforcement of curfew and heavy deployment of security personnel, the authorities in Jammu and Kashmir thwarted the Hurriyat Conference-sponsored “freedom march” to Lal Chowk on Monday. The separatist leaders remained under house arrest for the second day. Except in Baramulla town, the situation remained peaceful throughout the Kashmir Valley. A group of people took out a procession in Baramulla shouting pro-freedom slogans. No one was allowed to move about and the security forces dotted all the streets, equipped with tear gas shells, helmets and lathis. Inter-district roads were also closed to stop any movement by the people towards Srinagar. On Monday, security forces did not honour the curfew passes issued to even senior officers. © Copyright 2000 - 2009 The Hindu |
