Shreema ends on a high note; Bangalore City dethrones Mysore

Special Correspondent

MYSORE: Bangalore City dethroned Mysore from the highest pedestal at the Dussera Games, which the host division had made it its own over the last two years.

After the conclusion of all the games at this edition of the three day event, Bangalore City amassed 111 points to pip Mysore to the second spot with 108 points.

On the final day here, kho kho and handball evoked keen following even as the athletics events saw five new meet marks being rewritten. Kho kho even had a controversial ending though the final verdict went in favour of Mysore in the men’s section.

In athletics, Shreema Priyadarshini won five gold medals and a silver medal at the Chamundi Vihar Stadium on Monday.

Having pocketed the 200m gold on Sunday, Shreema, the lanky heptathlete from Mangalore but who ran for Mysore Division here, made it a sprint double winning the 100m with an effort of 12.15s. She then went on to comfortably pocket the 100m hurdles, the discus and the 4x400m relay gold as well.

She then anchored the 4x100m Mysore team to a silver behind the Pramila Aiyappa-led Bangalore team. Shreema’s 100m hurdles effort of 14.19s erased Poonam Bojanna’s 1999 meet mark of 14.70s.

Sprint double for Vikas

The day also saw four other meet records being established to make it 11 for this year’s edition. Vikas M. Puthran, a 400 metres international, hailing from Mangalore and running for Mysore, too capped a brilliant sprint double.

If Vikas timed 21.7s for the 200m on Sunday for a new meet record, on Monday the strapping youngster clocked 10.92s for the shorter sprint. Running in the inside lane,

Vikas was off to a perfect start and just blitzed through. G.C. Praveen Kumar of Mysore pushed back the fancied G.N. Bopanna to the third place.

S.B. Akshaya, from Alva’s Moodbidri, leapt to her second gold and record of the meet, winning the triple jump event. Her effort of 12.18m bettered Natasha Sagar’s three-year-old mark of 11.21m. Second placed Joyline M. Lobo (City) and P.B. Jyothi (Belgaum) too bettered Natasha’s mark.

New mark

M. Arshad of Al Ameen College, Bangalore, too rewrote the corresponding triple jump mark for men jumping a distance of 14.89m.

This bettered Vijayshankar’s last year’s mark of 13.89m.

V. Rohit of Bangalore City established a new mark in the 800m for men clocking 1:52.65 bettering Shankar Dixit’s (Mysore) mark of 1:56.37.

The Mysore quartet then provided a perfect finish to the athletics events with a record breaking feat in the 4x100m relay.

It pegged back the Bangalore City challenge timing 42.78s which was better than the Clifford Joshua-anchored 2003 time of 43.30 set by Bangalore City.

While Shreema emerged the undisputed women’s individual champion, the men’s honours was shared jointly by Vikas and S.G. Harish, both with two gold medals and a new record.
