S. Vigneshwar of Tiruchi city and attached to the Sports Development Authority of Tamil Nadu (SDAT) Academy, Chennai, won the gold in 3 mtrs springboard diving event at the Tamil Nadu State Senior Aquatic Championship 2008 held at Chennai recently. Vigneshwar collected 156.40 points to annex the gold. Olympian Sebastian Xavier gave away the medal to him at the valediction. The Tiruchi District Aquatic Promoters’ Association has commended the achievement of Vigneshwar. Saplings plantedNSS volunteers of St. Philomina’s Higher Secondary School in the city organised a mass sapling planting campaign in Kiliyur village in connection with a 10-day special camp. Convener of SHEPHERD Extension Department, St. Joseph’s College, Jayachandran was the chief guest and he inaugurated the tree planting campaign. Speaking on the occasion, he underlined the importance of increasing the forest cover for protecting the environment. A large number of saplings were planted in Kiliyur village and surrounding areas. NSS Programme Officer Monica Joselin and Assistant Programme Officer Cladia also spoke. Over-all title for Xavier houseXavier house won the overall championship at the 74th annual sports meet of Campion Anglo Indian Higher Secondary School. Britto house finished runners-up. Mothi Arun (Loyola House), Amerian Baxter (Xavier house) and Mohammed Salahuddin (Xavier house) bagged the individual championship in the under-12, 14 and 17 age categories respectively. The honour was shared by M. Gunasekar and J. Harish (both of Britto house) and B. Asif Ahamed (Xavier house) in the under-19 category. Commander, NCC GP HQ, Tiruchi, Col. Benz K. Jacob was the chief guest. Meena Benz gave away the prizes. Principal Bro. Jesuraj, sports secretary Bro. David and past principals commended the students. Best volunteerSeven volunteers of Junior Red Cross (JRC) unit of the Khajamian Higher Secondary School, Tiruchi, won laurels at the three day district level special JRC camp held at Sempattu near here last week. A total of 486 JRC volunteers from 86 schools in the district participated. The student volunteers took active participation in the various competitions held at the camp. All the seven students of the Khajamian HSS excelled in these competitions. Hari Balaji of Khajamian was adjudged at the best JRC volunteer of the camp and was given a gold medal. Tamil Selvan won the first prize in diary writing event and the third prize in cultural competition. Heamaster M. I. Mohamed Ali, Staff Counsellor Jawahar Hassan, Advisor I. Badarusada felicitated them. St. Joseph’s wins football finalA team from St. Joseph’s College Higher Secondary School won the Tiruchi District-level inter-school under-17 football tournament held recently. They played the final against R.C. Higher Secondary School and won the match 2-0. Headmaster and Correspondent Fr. A. Augustine congratulated the students. Students donate Rs. 30,000Students of BHEL Tamil Medium Middle School, Kailasapuram, donated Rs. 30,000 to the Indian Development Foundation engaged in implementing project for the rehabilitation of the TB and leprosy patients. At a function held recently, Sam Deva Asir of the Foundation delivered a special address on ‘tuberculosis and leprosy’. He also handed over a certificate of appreciation to school Headmistress V.
