New train needed

The new broad gauge railway line between Tiruchendur and Tirunelveli has been opened for traffic recently. The Rameswaram- Chennai Egmore ‘Sethu Express’ that was running via Madurai for some time has been diverted to run through Manamadurai and Karaikudi. To compensate this loss to Madurai people, a new express train, ‘Chendur Express,’ can be introduced between Tiruchendur and Chennai Egmore on the same timings. A passenger service between Tiruchendur and Madurai via Tirunelveli must also be introduced.

Paramount Airways has introduced a direct flight service between Madurai and Ahmedabad via Chennai. A direct air link between Madurai and national capital New Delhi via Chennai is the need of the hour since Madurai, presently a trade, religious and tourist centre is going to become an IT hub in the near future. Paramount Airways’ may consider operating one of its ‘Madurai-Chennai- Madurai’ service as ‘Madurai-Chennai- Delhi-Chennai-Madurai’ service.

Tower clock

It has been published in The Hindu several times the dire need for installing a tower clock in front of Madurai railway station similar to the one at Chennai Central railway station, visible to people coming to the station from all directions. It will enhance the appearance of the railway junction too. I appeal to the railway authorities to take action to install a tower clock at the earliest.

An eye sore

The newly constructed compound wall of Vellaichamy Nadar College in Nagamalai Pudukottai has been ruined by wall paintings, advertisements, wall posters and graffiti. Mega size flex boards have also been erected along the wall. I request the authorities to inspect the place and take action to clear the mess.

Ban on smoking

Since cinema halls are one of the favourite places for smoking in public, local police in civilian clothes, with the cooperation of theatre management, must pounce on them to implement the smoking ban in true spirit.

Creamy layer

The demand for inclusion of creamy layer in BC and OBC for reservation of seats for higher education and posts is against natural justice and equality before law. While thousands of BC and OBC candidates are waiting, either inclusion of creamy layer or transferring vacant seats to the next year quota is totally unjust and against the purpose of reservation which calls for maximum benefits to the BC and OBC in every quota and year. Hence creamy layer must be excluded in reservation as they have attained the status of FC both socially and economically.

Customer meet

Anna Nagar Uzhavar Sandhai is the first such market in the State, inaugurated by Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi. The people from Gomathipuram, Anna Nagar, Tahshildar Nagar, K.K. Nagar, Mathichiyam, Teppakulam and other places are utilising this facility. It stands as an example to other Uzhavar Sandhais in the areas of cleanliness, trees and hygienic practices.

But the vegetable vendors are not behaving properly with the customers. Discrepancy in rates and weights are also occurring often here. Hence conducting a “customer meet” for Uzhavar Sandhais once every month will certainly improve the standards at the markets.

Learning English

Graduates from all disciplines remain unemployed for want of English communication skill. English knowledge cannot be improved at the eleventh hour. Besides the subjects in the curriculum, English newspaper, magazines and standard books of various subjects in English should be read with rapt attention to learn new works and different styles of syntax. Forming a circle of friends who are interested in English and have a similar mental wavelength and values will mutually motivate people to be in touch with English and not to loss the tempo for learning.

Watching English news bulletins on TV sharpens the listening faculty of the brain. It must be noted that it is the listening test in which many TOEFL candidates fail. Dictionary habit must be cultivated and grammar books of good quality be kept for ready reference.

Put simply, one’s consciousness should be occupied by English. Only then one could acquire fluency, proficiency and a reasonable mastery of this language.

Charge fee

It is common sight that almost all walls of public buildings and bridges are full of messages of political parties. They are all ‘toll-free’ advertisements. When the PWD authorities charge toll for vehicles passing through new roads/bridges why do not the Government departments charge fee for the advertisements of political parties at per sq.ft / per day or auction the advertisement rights. It would yield substantial income for the departments concerned.
