KARAIKUDI: The Alagappa University has decided to introduce seven new courses including Master of Business Administration (Human Resource Management) through the distance education mode from the current academic year. Speaking to The Hindu here on Tuesday, P. Ramasamy, Vice-Chancellor, said the Postgraduate Diploma in Human Resource Management, M.Sc (Chemistry), M.Sc (Physics), M.Sc (Botany) with specialization in plant bio-technology, PG Diploma in Library Automation and Networking and certificate course in Library Information Science were the other new courses approved by the Syndicate. He added that it was resolved to create a School of Animal Health and Management to pursue courses on animal health and related subject. The Standing Committee on Academic Affairs and the Syndicate had approved the proposal. Mr. Ramasamy said three new centres such as the Centre for Maine Microbial Technology, the Centre for Marine Pharmacology and the Centre for Marine Geology would be created. Three new courses such as M.Sc. Marine Microbial Technology, M.Sc. Marine Pharmacology and M.Sc. Marine Geology would be introduced under the School of Marine Sciences. In order to speed up the process of evaluation of Ph.D. thesis, a few modifications were introduced in the regulations of evaluation. A panel of experts could be named along with the synopsis. They should be four experts from different universities other than the Alagappa University. Research supervisors were asked to provide email id of the experts, fax and telephone numbers for speedy correspondence. The Vice-Chancellor said the Ramanujan Centre for Higher Mathematics had already started functioning in the University. Construction works were on to construct buildings for the Ramanujan Centre at a cost of Rs.1.11 crore. It was decided to create 14 faculty positions, including an honorary director and a professor. Similarly 14 lecturer posts would be created for the courses offered through the Directorate of Distance Education. It would improve the quality of education in distance education.
