Vishnu Ramesan steals the show

Principal Correspondent

PALA: Vishnu Ramesan had many reasons to celebrate his 50m backstroke victory at the Mahatma Gandhi University inter-collegiate swimming championship at the St. Thomas College pool here on Tuesday evening.

Apart from winning the gold with a meet record, the 18-year-old from St. Xavier’s College was one of the few swimmers to make the qualifying grade for the forthcoming all-India varsities meet in Mumbai.

Vishnu, who trains in a temple pond in Vaikom, was pushed hard by the record-holder Anil Francis in the backstroke sprint and when he hit the finish, the year-old mark fell easily.

The St. George College swimmers who train in a small river close to their institution in Aruvithura dethroned the host St. Thomas College and won the men’s team title.
