Action please: The daily vegetable market in Chennimalai lacks basic amenities.

CHENNIMALAI: The daily vegetable market here that bears freedom fighter Tirupur Kumaran’s name is in a bad shape.

All that make up the market are thatched roofs put up by vendors themselves. Beneath the make-shift roofs, the vendors sit on raised earth selling vegetables.

It has been so ever since the market started functioning at the present venue from May 1990, says vegetable vendor S. Palanisamy.

He has been a vegetable vendor for the last two decades. He says there is no toilet and drinking water facility at the site.

For all the facilities they ‘enjoy’ the vendors pay Rs. 5 a day as rent.

Not only that, the Chennimalai Town Panchayat has now asked the vendors to convert their thatched roofs in to asbestos.

The vendors say they do not have the money to roof themselves under asbestos.

Asked about the market condition, sources in the civic body say they have sent a proposal a year ago to the district administration to construct 25 shops in the market.

They add that the proposal is pending with the administration.
