KAMAN POST (URI): A new chapter in trans-Line of Control (LoC) relations was opened on Thursday when a 19-member delegation of “Azad Jammu and Kashmir” Chamber of Commerce and Industry (AJKCCI) arrived here on a week long visit finalise modalities for trade on both sides. The delegation led by AJKCCI president Zulfikar Abbasi crossed the Kaman Post, the last point on the LoC on this side, at around 12.30 p.m. and was received by Deputy Commissioner, Baramulla, Baseer Khan and other officials. They were later accorded a warm welcome by the Kashmir Chamber of Commerce and Industry (KCCI) at the Salamabad Tourist Reception Centre. “It is a journey of peace and prosperity,” Mr. Abbasi told reporters soon after stepping into Indian territory. “The relations which were snapped will be restored.” He said it was an important breakthrough and would strengthen the peace process. His organisation would work towards making the trade across LoC purposeful. He, however, said he was not satisfied with the item list. “It should be subjected to a review after three months.” KCCI president Mubeen Shah said they would thoroughly discuss issues related to trade. “It will not be merely symbolic,” he said. Fruit Growers Association leader Ghulam Rasool Bhat said that the initiative would help a great deal to lessen the tension between the two countries. “This is the best route for trade and will prove to be beneficial for both the sides.” The delegation is here for a week to discuss modalities for trade that is scheduled to begin on October 21. It will hold meetings with KCCI and government officials among others. It will also hold the talks with the Jammu Chamber of Commerce and Industry as trade would be started from the Poonch-Rawlakot road in Jammu region as well. The government has, however, not allowed the KCCI to talk to the Hurriyat Conference. “They have no role in this. It is purely a business trip,” said a top official. © Copyright 2000 - 2009 The Hindu |
