MOSCOW: Russia has pulled back its troops from buffer zones in Georgia ahead of an October 10 deadline negotiated in a E.U.-brokered peace deal last month. The withdrawal was completed before midnight on October 8, the Foreign Ministry said in a statement issued on Thursday. Russia had deployed its forces in the so-called “security zones” inside Georgia after repulsing a Georgian armed attempt to retake the breakaway territory of South Ossetia. © Copyright 2000 - 2009 The Hindu |
