Desilting of canals begins

NAGAPPATTINAM: Work on desilting the canals and waterways of the Pazhankaviri and Pudukaviri near Mayiladuthurai has started, with the Collector sanctioning Rs. 17.5 lakh for the project. Farmers near Mayiladuthurai had complained that silt had caused clogging of waterways near Mayiladuthurai, resulting in sufficient water not being made available for nearly 2,800 hectares in the region. Following this, the Collector ordered immediate desilting of the canals between Mayiladuthurai and Arupathy, and said that further action would be taken soon.
