Thunder showers lash Tirunelveli

Low-lying areas inundated in Tuticorin and Nagercoil

TIRUNELVELI: Sudden thunder showers soaked the district on Saturday night. The rain that started shortly before midnight was expected to help the farmers prepare their farms for next paddy season ‘pisanam’. A huge tree on the VOC Ground in Palayamkottai was uprooted in the overnight rain. Rainfall in the district (in mm): Palayamkottai – 50, Tirunelveli – 40.20, Sivagiri – 28.20, Nanguneri – 19, Adavinainar dam – 17.50, Gadana dam – 14, Kodumudiyar dam – 10, Tenkasi – 9.10, Papanasam dam and Ambasamudram – 8, Shencottai – 7, Gundar and Servalar dams – 6, Sankarankovil – 5.30, Karuppanadhi dam – 5, Alangulam – 4.80, Namibyar and Ramanadhi dams – 2 and Manimuthar dam – 1.40.

Tuticorin

Many low-lying areas in the city were inundated due to the intermittent rains on Sunday. According to PWD officials, Maniyachi recorded 90 mm rainfall during the last 24 hours, followed by Ottapidaram (in mm): 52, Vaipar: 35, Koilpatti: 22, Vedanatham: 20, Srivaikundam, Kayathar and Kalugumalai recorded 12 mm each, Tuticorin: 10.6, Sathankulam: 9, Kadambur: 8, Vilathikulam: 4, and Ettayapuram and Kulasekaranpattinam recorded the lowest rainfall of 3 mm. The rains also hit normal life as traffic was paralysed in many parts of the district.

Nagercoil

Heavy rain accompanied by lightning and thunder lashed various parts of the district on Sunday, bringing relief to the farming community who were busy with preparatory works for second crop cultivation. The low-lying areas were flooded and normal life was affected in different parts of the district.

The maximum rainfall of 54.8 mm was recorded at Kottaram.
