Festivals like Sivaratri and Dasara and events like Bhavani Deeksha are annual features and the traffic management near Durga ghat is difficult even if we have a four-lane road. In view of jam, the traffic diversion at Durga ghat is inevitable for smooth passage of these festivals. It is time the authorities started thinking of finding alternative routes that do not cause traffic jam. They can widen the Gollapudi bypass road, the Chitti Nagar tunnel road and lay a pucca road from Sitara Centre to Milk Project and also up to Chittinagar centre. They may also consider the possibility of new tunnel connecting Ganapathi Rao Road to Ambedkar Road. These would be of great help even when we have a Gollapudi-Ramavarappadu bypass and flyovers. C. Ram Mohun, Vijayawada Free left turnFree left turn at many junctions in the city is very difficult due to improper layouts and planning. The vehicle users are forced to wait till signal turns green at junctions even if they want to take a left turn, which is resulting in traffic jam. At some places like Mahatma Gandhi Road, there are free left turns. But, on Karl Marx Road, we don’t find such provision from Chuttugunta to Swarna Palace. A similar situation prevails at other places and roads. The city planners are unable to insist that the builders and developers design the layouts with proper free left turns. It is time the municipal authorities discussed the issue with the city police and took necessary action so that traffic flow is smooth. Katragadda Narasayya, Vijayawada. Smoking banAmerican Research survey reports say that smoking is the number one worst habit amongst the bad habits. Smoking spoils the health of passive smokers also, apart from the health of smokers. Women and children are victims of smoking in public places. In view of the health hazards, the Union Government has banned smoking in public places from October 2. But, many people are sceptical about the implementation of the ban. The authorities concerned should take necessary steps and implement the ban with no second thoughts. V. Srinivas, Vijayawada Take actionA piece of vacant land near Don Bosco School and the District Sub-Registrar’s office on Gurunanak Road is causing immense problem to residents nearby. As there are no drainage facilities to about 20 houses surrounding this vacant land, they are letting drainage out into this vacant land. The stagnated drainage water has become a breeding ground for mosquitoes and is emitting bad smell. The municipal authorities are requested to take necessary action. Y. Muralidhar, Vijayawada Side middle berthThe Railway authorities recently introduced side middle berths in many trains. Any one who is taller than 152 inches will find it very difficult to stretch in the side berths. This is already a big problem, and more passengers are going to suffer with this decision. The authorities have conveniently forgotten the average height of Indians before taking this decision. The driving factor in seating design should be comfortable travel at a reasonable cost. Unfortunately, it is now more passengers with least comfort but more revenue. D. Dhanunjaya Rao, Machilipatnam. © Copyright 2000 - 2009 The Hindu |
