Threat calls to Mamata’s residence

KOLKATA: The city police are inquiring into complaints of two anonymous telephone calls made to the residence of Trinamool Congress chief Mamata Banerjee on Monday afternoon threatening her life. Ms. Banerjee was away in New Delhi when the calls were made to her landline.

She was informed of the calls and directed her party colleagues to lodge a complaint with the police.

Plans to call on Manmohan

The Trinamool Congress leader is in the capital and plans to call on Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and President Pratibha Patil to seek their intervention for operationalising an understanding arrived at between the State Government and her associates to return land acquired at Singur for the Tata Motors Nano project (that is now being relocated) to farmers who had not accepted compensation for their plots.

The Trinamool Congress leadership had early in August alleged that Ms. Banerjee had received a telephone call as well as an SMS (short message service) on her mobile threatening her life.
